  • The taxable gross weight is higher than initially considered
  • The mileage limit has been exceeded by a suspended vehicle

Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT)

Heavy Vehicle Use Tax

HVUT applies to highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

Tax Calculation

HVUT is imposed on the use of taxable highway motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The tax for 55,000 pounds starts at $100, goes up by $22 for each additional 1,000 pounds (or fraction thereof) up to 75,000 pounds, and then stops at $550 a year.

Proration Rules

When vehicles are used for the first time on public highways after July 1, the heavy vehicle use tax is prorated based on the remaining months in the tax period (July 1-June 30) according to IRS Table I in Form 2290 instructions.
